So out of the blue, I get a message from Google saying they're tracking my location and all the places I've visited.

I'm sure it will track spas you visited too...anyways, just a heads up as I'm guessing most of you will want to turn this off.

So out of the blue, I get a message from Google saying they're tracking my location and places visited. They even know that I've been to the Monte Carlo recently. WTF!!!

Per the picture below, they said that I turned on this feature but I never did shit so this must be turned on by default. Not sure why I only got this message now though...

I'm sure it will track spas you visited too...anyways, just a heads up as I'm guessing most of you will want to turn this off.

You can disable the location tracker but you will have a hard time when you want to use your GPS.

I've turned off location tracking of my phone. Its under the manage settings. But damn when i got that email the first time i was like wtf. Tracked all my visits to the spas

It was nice to get retrospective to all spas I have visited for a few years.
The feature turned on by default.
Also, disabling this doesn't affect any GPS functionality.

Gps still works after disabling the location tracker but you have to type in where you are at and where you want to go. With location tracker on, all I have to do is talk to the google map where I want to go in the middle of my driving and it gives me the shortest route without typing in anything.

you get a notification once a month. I get so many emails, I sometimes missed the one from google for a long period fo time.

I usually turn my location off when going to these places. But you can also disable web activity history and map timeline history, so that you can still use location but your timeline/history will not be available.

If you don't know about Google Maps Timeline, you can see fairly accurate trips that you take, how long it took you to get there, where you went and how long you were there, etc. You may want to look through and delete things.

There are two different settings: Location and Location History. The first one is used by varoius apps to know where you are right now, e.g. for directions or finding things near you. The second is only used by Google Maps Timeline AFAIK to record your movements over time. You can disable history but keep current location tracking on for a good balance.

BTW this is yet another reason to keep a burner phone. I usually leave my real phone at home when I go out for this stuff, so the Google overlords are none the wiser.

When you activate a android phone you need to provide a gmail address. Well once you provide a gmail email address (real,fake) your signed in. These features become active.

This feature is enabled automatically, you have to manually disable it. Alot of people dont know about this until they get a email showing you everywhere you have been since you activated the phone.

Not hourly but there's a day rate of $90 all in until 4pm (but you can stay a bit later than that). I have a thread about this...
