They are locking down everything yet flights are available in and out of Toronto. Makes no sense to me.

This is a joke not a lockdown. The longer the Ford government stretching this kind of restrictions the more businesses will cease. And we are screwed not the way we want to be. There are still some hidden alleys if you want to hobby. Real lockdown = curfew from 22:00 to 05:00. Essential services only - do it for one month COVID numbers will come down so fast. better for the economy, better for the people.

^International travel is limited by existing regulation. Travel within the province isn't legally retricted by land, why should it by restricted by air?

Im talking about flights from high risks countries where the virus is a lot worse. I see little if any restrictions on air travel. Flights from Europe (except England now) and the US land everyday. Im betting few follow the self quarantine rules given that no one can check.

^Actually flights are down by like 90% if not more. You need to prove the travel is essential (e.g. you live/work/study/have immediate family in Canada). They primarily check by calling you at the quarantine address at random times around the clock. I know people in quarantine who got checked by officers knocking on doors, but those are rare.

Ford was complaining today during his news conference that thousands are coming through Pearson with little to no screening at all.

He said the federal government needs to be doing way more with international travellers and if they don't then the Province is going to find some way to intervene... He also mentioned this new UK mutation of the virus that is apparently much more contagious.

I'm not making the case myself... just sharing this is the reasoning as to why for some.

The feds are saying that less than 1% are being caused by travel. Do we really want to dedicate nurses to airports to stop that 1% when hospitals, LTC, rehab places and seniors homes have staffing challenges. I think old Dougie just wants the feds to pay for everything, and then slam them later for having out of control deficits. Time for Ontario to spend more and help the small businesses to survive.

No one is enforcing any type of restriction on air travel.

The restrictions are on the way in. i.e. the US lets them in because they own property in Florida. When they come back next spring, they'll be subject to whatever quarantine requirements in place at the time.

Travel only accounts for 10-20 cases a day in Ontario. They should do more to enforce quarantines, but shutting down flights is extreme for such a small number of cases.

They shut down restaurants for similar numbers. One of my friend's family just got back from a trip to Mexico. He mentioned the flight down was packed, no empty seats.

Since so much of covid discussion seems to trigger people (what doesn't these days?), let me preface the following by saying my questions are sincere. I really don't know the answer to these or so many others.

Why do we think lockdowns work when just to the south of us we have plenty of examples of states pursuing opposite strategies with minimal difference in outcome? Texas isn't locked down, California is. Look at the numbers, it is impossible to correlate the effectiveness of a lockdown to the results.
Why do so many poor countries have better death/million stats than rich ones?
Why doesn't anyone ask about China continuing to insist they have 88k cases and 4k dead?
Why haven't we by now built separate health facilities for covid patients?
What has Canada done to increase the capacity of covid-related treatment resources?

Sorry if any of you consider these questions tantamount to being a Trump supporter, but I don't think I'm the only one that doesn't know the answers to these things, and they should all be part of an informed discussion...no? Why do I never hear a reporter ask anything like this?

Poor countries might not have the ability to track and report on numbers. But at the same time many are in hotter climates and may be able to spend more time outdoors and distanced. Depending on the country (e.g. Asian countries) they could be more likely to follow the rules and wear masks. Poorer countries would also have lower life expectancy so they have less vulnerable old people than richer countries where the death percentage is the highest (they just don’t have the same amount of people aged 70+ to kill off from the virus).

China will lie about their numbers. But at the same time they are more likely to order the most strict lock-downs

Separate facilities for Covid patients? Brick and mortar facilities with HVAC, ventilation equipment, etc would take too long to build for what should be a temporary problem until we have wide vaccination. Tents won’t do well in our winter weather.

What type of Covid related treatment resources are you referring to? We have access to information and safety measures. We have secured the supply of N95 masks and other PPE for front line workers. They are working on the distribution issues including security. Facilities I already mentioned. Canada has purchased more doses than we need and will donate excess to poorer countries. The most important resource is not space but trained front line workers and their capacity to helponly a certain number of patients at a time. It’ll take years to train new nurses and doctors.
