Maybe if you're in the middle of nowhere, like on Easter Island or something, but much harder to be effective in an interconnected world with millions of people making what's deemed essential travel.

With previous flight bans there were all kinds of exceptions for citizens returning, diplomacy, essential business, etc. All you need is a one case and bam a new variant is circulating. I'm not saying it doesn't make any difference - it does. So does everyone locking themselves in their rooms forever. The problem is you have to consider what is viable, not just what is effective.
